I will put keeping women and girls safe at the heart of my policing plan.

Working with stakeholders in the region I will lead the development of a comprehensive Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy.

Historically the reporting and conviction rates around domestic violence of all kinds are low. I will use my office to promote educational programmes, action and awareness of domestic abuse, including understanding consent, financial abuse and coercive control, in schools and amongst young people.

Recognising that the vast majority of violent offences against both men and women are committed by men, I will explore effective ways of addressing this through education, the provision of appropriate support, and preventative measures. I will build upon Domestic Violence Perpetrator Pilots already put in place by the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, giving offenders a chance to change behaviours and reduce the likelihood of re-offending.

Working with councils and other agencies, I will support the resourcing of refuges, rape crisis services and others providing services to victims of intimate and domestic violence and sexual assault. The Safer Communities Fund will ensure that projects that support victims are themselves supported, particularly amongst groups that are less likely to report sexual or intimate violence.

I will take steps to ensure that women reporting misogyny, sexual harassment, assault, and rape are treated seriously and with respect.
